We stock two different finishes - Gloss and Silk. Coated paper tends to produce sharp, bright printing because the ink isn't absorbed into the paper very much, and the coating means light is reflected well. It's commonly used for leaflets, posters, flyers, business cards etc.

Uncoated Paper is print stock that doesn't have an outer coating. Some people prefer it because it feels more natural. The results in print are totally different to coated stocks though, as the ink is absorbed into the paper, allowing the dots to expand resulting in a print that is less sharp, and less bright than coated stocks. It's commonly used for stationery (letterheads and compliment slips) as well as business cards, loyalty cards, flyers etc

There we have it - a quick intro to coated and uncoated papers... Take a look at our website if you're interested in ordering printing - http://ping.fm/y7umS

CMYK - explained

CMYK is used everywhere as way to achieve full colour printing. It's also known as process, 4-colour process and full colour process and uses 4 ink colours - Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y), and Black (K - which stands for Key). The colours are layed down on the paper as tiny dots which combine to create the illusion (to our eyes) of other colours. If you have a look at something that's been printed under a magnifying glass you should be able to see the 'matrix' of tiny dots of each colour!

There we have it - a quick intro to CMYK. Check out our website at http://ping.fm/994ZS if you're looking to get something printed - we specialise in Flyers, Business Cards and Leaflets. :)

Mineral Oil Ink vs Vegetable Oil Ink

In the past there was little choice for printers when it came to caring for the environment. Traditional ink was made from Mineral Oil which contains some pretty hazardous substances (such as petroleum hydrocarbons which results in smog), and some rather nasty sounding metals and salts (such as antimony, chromium, selenium, arsenic, mercury, cobalt, cadmum, maganese, lead etc).

In recent years no doubt helped by advances in technology and environmental awareness, an alternative in the form of Mineral Oil Free ink has become available - and whilst there were problems at first with quality, these days both quality and price are almost indistinguishable.

So what is Mineral Oil Free ink?

Mineral Free Inks replaces the mineral oil used to makeup the ink with vegetable oil which, because of the absense of heavy metals, improves degradability, is manufactured from a renewable resource, and crucially eliminates over 99% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released into the atmosphere, making it much nicer for the environment and printing staff.

Here at The Local Print Company we only use vegetable oil based inks that are 100% free from mineral oils. Get it right now and you can reap the benefits long into the winter months - the quietest time of year for many.

Here at The Local Print Company we thought we'd write a quick blog post with a great recipe for a seasonal leaflet soup - perfect for drawing customers through the door, and driving sales.

You'll need:

A dash of creativity - be creative with your design, think of a good angle and focus on one sales message

A pinch of discount - people need a reason to act on advertising... perhaps a discount coupon, an invitation to an event or a time dependent deal

A good dolop of energy - it'll take energy to distribute leaflets, having a stack on a counter might not be enough to drive sales - after all the only people who are going to see them are already through the door. If i'm not already a customer it's either because I don't know about the company, or I'm not interested, and a mug isn't going to change that.

So what is the point? What's a mug going to do?

Remind you of the company (if someone orders that much they're not going to forget you, if they don't order enough they probably don't need to)

Convince you to buy from the company (buying based on a mug seems a little weak?!)

Let a colleague know how wonderful the company must be because you're drinking from one of their mugs (sounds like rather unusual behaviour)

I like my mugs to be pretty, with nice colours, a lovely picture and to feel nice when I hold it... yet so many promotional mugs feel cheap and have a rubbish design on... If you really must get mugs made why not forget you're advertising your company, and instead focus on the design... something striking that makes people look at it and think "What a lovely mug" - then pop your logo on there somewhere so that when hoards of people queue up to look at 'Greg's' mug they all see your logo proudly displayed on the worlds most beautiful mug.

RANT OVER, It's not all about me, so do what you like - just don't send them to me! ;)

Written by Stroppy @ The Local Print Company

Today's offer is on 1000 Letterheads... just £65 (saving £30). They're one of the easiest ways for small businesses to get attention and draw people to their business or organisation.

Getting flyers printed is now so cheap there's no reason why businesses of any size can't get the same 'look and feel' as much larger companies, but as with everything there's a few things to remember...

3 points to remember to get the best result...

You know (hopefully) who your customers are, so think about HOW you're going to target them; if you're offering window cleaning there's no point handing out flyers in a town centre on a friday night... (you get the point).

Think about the point of your flyers... if you're aim is to fill your cafe with hungry punters there's little point harping on about how wonderful your event catering skills are. Try to stick to just one focus - this might be to make a sale, to get people to an event, or get a positive sales lead.

Spend time and effort on your artwork... make it as beautiful as possible (nobody likes an ugly flyer). If you don't have the skills yourself DON'T design it yourself! Every year we print millions of flyers and are responsible for posters, leaflets and business cards everywhere - especially in the South-West of England where we're based. Customers return again, and again, and again and regardless of how hideous their design is are getting successful, cost effective returns from handing out, posting or displaying printed promotional messages in their local area.

What are you going on about?
I'm talking about getting someone (preferably us) to print you some flyers or leaflets to hand out, post or leave about the place in a bid to increase the following of what you're currently doing - whether you want to boost the number of people who turn up to your parish council meetings, let everyone know that there's a fun day at the local park, draw people into your shop to buy your stuff or fill an empty cafe with middle aged women.

How will printing help me do that?
If you're in business hopefully it's doing something people are interested in - however obscure it might be (and believe me we work with some pretty unusual businesses).
Chances are that you are - i'm probably not the only one who was disappointed when i realised they hadn't actually invented doggy dentures when i watched the advert for some dog chew that helps their teeth! So 'how do you think printing will help'? Do I need to tell you?! Getting people to do what you want is as easy as finding your market and telling them about yourself, what you offer yadayada.

So something like flyers are a great way to do that - you can target them at exactly who you want... in the street as handouts, through the letterboxes of posh houses, on the windscreens of white vans etc...
The best bit of course is that you don't have to be a marketing genius... you just need a bit of cash (most businesses can afford £90 for 1000 flyers to be design and printed), and a bit of energy / effort (to hand them out - or whatever).

The Local Print Company reduce turnaround on glossy flyers!

We're delighted to announce that we've reduced the turnaround time for all glossy flyers to just 4 working days. This blog finds out!

Setting the files up ready for design...

Starting with the real basics - we like your resolution to be 300dpi and for you to design in CMYK (full colour) right from the start, so get that sorted first and foremost, and then look at the size you're working with...

When setting artwork up it's important to remember your bleed. Here at The Local Print Company we like 2mm bleed on all sides, meaning your actual artwork dimensions need to be 4mm larger than the finished size - so with business cards which are 85x55mm, your artwork will need to be 89x59mm (this will be trimmed down to 85x55mm after production). The purpose of bleed is to compensate for small movements during production - we print slightly bigger than is necessary so when it's cut we don't run out of artwork - thus showing a nasty white line down the edge. Many printers like 3mm, but as the tolerance is generally only 1mm there's no real need - some designers tend to get a little uptight about this, so if it makes you feel better, 3mm bleed is fine (we'll just cut it off)!

It's also an idea to pop a few ruler guidelines (which won't show up when printed), you might like to give yourself a guide to mark the bleed lines, and we recommend an extra 3-5mm is left 'quiet' with no important text or design elements. This is because printed things that are too close to the edge it usually looks like a mistake - a bit like it's falling off the edge.

Once you've got this all set up please remember to save it (preferably with a sensible, meaningful name) - I know how anoying it is when you've spent half an hour working on a design, and just as you start getting somewhere your computer crashes and it's lost (never to be seen again)!

The actual design bit...

Once you've got everything set up nicely and you've got your guides marked out you can start thinking about the design. There's loads of design inspiration sites out there to help come up with some ideas for your design - this link might be a good start - it's over 100 design inspiration sites, blogs. pages etc, or just type in something like 'business card design inspiration' on google. If you're really struggling you could even have a look at a few portfolios of local (or national) graphic design agencies.

There's no right or wrong way to design your artwork, personally i like to get all the content i'm going to need on the page first (logos, text, titles, contact details etc) and then look at the colours i'd like to work with, the images i'm using, the layout, fonts etc. You might find it easier to work in a different way, and that's fine - nobody can tell you how you like to work.

It probably goes without saying that you will probably find it easier if you zoom your design out so you can see the whole thing at once whilst designing it? Always remember to check it at 100% actual size as you go through though as images that look fine at 25% zoom might look dreadful at 100% etc. It's also really easy to get things lined up while zoomed out only to find they look dreadful and totally off when you zoom in.

There's various resources and guides out there that talk about not using too many fonts, sizes and colours, not to mention the horrors of working with things like clipart and many of them are true - though you're the one that's having a go, do something you're happy with. As mentioned above there's loads of inspiration which will help you get the right 'look', but i'm not going to insult you going on about how to make it look good etc - that's your job... you're the one designing it!

That said, as a general rule it's probably best to keep your font above about '6' as it's going to become pretty small below that. If you're catering to an 'older market' (no offense) it's probably best to keep it above '10' (as young as they might feel there is a slight tendency to not be able to see...) i'm not saying any more (!). It's also not a great idea to use CAPITALS FOR EVERYTHING as it can look like you're shouting and you'll get 'the look' more easily if you steer clear of the naff fonts like comic sans etc. Oh, and just to let you know, using Edwardian Script won't make you look posh...

If you're struggling to find any decent fonts in your collection there's loads of free ones available for commercial use - just do a search on Google, or check out my favourite here.

Similarly, if you're struggling to find any decent photos take a look at Stock Xchange which is a brilliant resource of free photos most of which are in high resolution, and available to use for free!

So there you have it, I think that's about it, other than to mention that we offer a premium file checking service if you're worried that you've designed it correctly or you want us to take a peek from a technical and design point of view just select it when checking out - it costs £15, more information along with our full artwork requirements is available here.

I hope that all makes sense and is useful to you, if you'd like to see how much we can save you on your printing (and you're in the UK) have a look at our website, we'd love to welcome you as a customer!

Thanks for reading!

What thickness and finish business cards should I order?

When it comes to ordering business cards there's a pretty huge choice out there, so here's a quick intro to what we offer, and what you might want to look out for when ordering business cards.

First of all, there's no right or wrong with business cards, the finish, and thickness depends on the type of business you're running and what you're using them for... If you run a taxi-firm you probably get through large numbers so price might be more important than quality, meanwhile if you're a chauffeur it's probably all about quality - and because you get through smaller numbers you're willing to invest proportionately more. As a general guide, business cards usually tend to be between 350gsm and 400gsm - though depending on their use can be higher or lower (as you'll see)!

We offer 3 thicknesses, and 3 coatings for business cards. Here's what we use and why...

250gsm silk - used for taxi business cards / mass market business cards
We only offer these in quantities above 10,000 - at £70 for 10k they're super cost effective, the sacrifice being thickness... at only 250gsm they're not thick enough for normal business cards. We've opted for silk coating so they're writable (with care) meaning they can be used for receipts etc as well as wallet sized reminders of your firm.

350gsm silk - used for all businesses looking for a cost effective, higher quality business card
Available in volumes as low as 250 (and as high as 100,000) these business cards make a high quality card without costing the earth. Usually business cards are between 350 and 400gsm, so these are about right. Once again we've opted for silk so they're writable (with care) meaning they're ok for use as receipts, appointment cards etc.

350gsm uncoated - used for businesses looking for a natural feeling product, or for loyalty cards etc
Again available in volumes as low as 250 (and up to 100k) uncoated cards are totally uncoated, having a natural feel which makes them perfect to be written on, stamped etc. We sell LOADS as loyalty cards, gift cards, appointment cards etc for all sorts of customers - shops, florists, beauty / hair salons... the list goes on - so if that's the sort of thing you're after, or you want a natural plain, sophisticated card, look out for uncoated ones! One thing to mention though, is that the ink soaks into uncoated card much faster than coated stocks (like silk etc), so if your design is heavily reliant on for instance block colour you may not get the result you expect with uncoated card.

Matt Laminated - used for businesses seeking a more luxurious feeling card
Matt Laminated business cards have a super smooth matt varnish applied to the surface. Available either one or both sides (we laminate both sides as standard) they're aimed at businesses who want a quality business card that looks and feels 'the business'. We offer these in 350gsm and 600gsm (rather show-stopping). They certainly can't be written on and they're a lot more durable (and long-lasting in your wallet) than non-laminated cards.

Other finishes you might come across...

Spot UV - sometimes called Spot Gloss, is a process of using a gloss varnish effectively as an ink, to highlight key areas of the design - for instance the logo, a picture etc. It's usually used on matt laminated cards, which gives a great contrast and can produce some really effective results.
Gloss Varnish - the same as matt laminated, but with gloss instead - rarely found, mainly because it tends to look dreadful... but whatever floats your boat!

All our business cards are printed lithographically, and yours should be too - it's simply not worth having your cards printed digitally because unless your design is really very basic (in which case be a bit more imaginative) they look cheap. Digital printing is great if you're in a real rush - and can look ok on uncoated card, but is poor at producing luxury results. Plus - at £30 for 250 business cards any price saving for digital print is going to be minimal.

If you're so excited by this article that feel compelled to immediately order your business cards with us just head over to the business card range on our website here.

So there you go - a quick intro to business cards, did it make sense?! Hopefully, but maybe not, so any questions you have don’t be afraid to ask, just get in touch - we’re here to help!
For more information or to order printing online check out our website.

Using Gmail for your small business...

We are The Local Print Company, and we use Gmail.

Here's why...

Our emails are dealt with on our servers, we collect them using pop3 but increasingly were having issues syncing between devices - in the office, on the laptop or using the mobile phone. No matter which device you use it's helpful if you can pick up where you left off - without any missed, or repeated emails.

With Gmail you can treat it just like you would Outlook, Thunderbird, Windows Mail or whichever other program you're using. Emails can be collected via POP3 and you can set up all your auto-responders, template replies, filters, etc that you would with software. Crucially though Gmail is Internet based, so no matter where you go in the world, or which device you use, all your sents, drafts, and inboxes are exactly the same, and easily accessible - on any device.

In practical terms it means we can massively increase the opportunity to do business... an example being a deal I did recently on a Sunday evening using my iPhone from the carpark of a rural business my wife works for... the customer was on a yacht somewhere off the coast of South-America. Right there in the space of perhaps 30 minutes I had agreed the price, given the customer a link to order online, and been paid. Without using Gmail i wouldn't be able to find the original quote, work out the amendments (using the pricelist saved in GoogleDocs) or add it to my to-do list to be picked up when I got into the office the next morning.

So that's why I would wholeheartedly recommend Gmail for your small business...

Jeremy - Director @ The Local Print Company.

For more information about the work we do or to order printing online check out our website.

Just written a blog post about Social Networking for small businesses - check it out at http://ping.fm/Ak2hS :)

Social Networking - how we're doing it...

We’ve been building our website from nothing over the last year or so. As an online retailer we have no route-to-market other than using the virtual online world of the Internet, which means getting to know our customers has been a real challenge.
In our experience the customers we have personal contact with return for far more than those who order purely online when our interaction is limited to a few automated emails from our website ordering system.
Social Networking gives us exactly the sort of interaction we need - with the help of services like Facebook and Twitter we can get right into the lives of our customers, with timely updates we can quickly spread the word about a product we’re wanting to push, whilst other services like Reddit and Delicious can help drive further traffic to our online ordering system.
To get an overview, using a service like Seesmic allows us to develop a virtual relationship with anyone who is potentially a customer, helping us break down the barriers that stop someone buying… who would you rather buy from… an ‘unknown’, or a friend? (For those who don’t know, Seesmic allows you to view and update all your social networks at once).
For small businesses deciding whether to start a ‘Facebook page’ or open a ‘Twitter account’ seems daunting, and the idea of working with 50+ services all at once might seem unrealistic but the reality is that it’s ridiculous not to be using these fantastic free resources. After all if you run a shop you probably spend time every day checking your window displays, if you own an estate agent you probably spend time every day updating your properties lists, if you manage a charity you probably spend time every day checking and responding to emails (you get the point)… so how is this any different? It’s a route-to-market, it’s a great way to get your name out there and it’s surely a must when running a business?
So in answer to the Blog’s title ‘how we’re doing it…’ the answer is prolifically… find us on our favourites… Plurk, Jaiku, Identi.ca, Blogspot
And there you go - make sense?! Maybe not, but any questions you have don’t be afraid to ask, just get in touch - we’re here to help!
For more information or to order printing online check out our website.

You can now find The Local Print Company on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Identi.ca, Plurk, Jaiku and Blogger... see you there! :)

The Local Print Company are on Blogger!

Hi there, welcome to the very first post from The Local Print Company on Blogger! You may have seen us on other blogging sites; we're building up a few now to help us connect with as many people as possible.

I guess I should pop a little introduction in here somewhere… I'm Jeremy, director of a Bristol (UK) based printer called The Local Print Company which since launching in 2010 has been on a mission to provide a fast, simple and easy way to order printing online with more choice, better service, lower prices and greater convenience than your local printer.

It seems the days of great local service are fast becoming a distant memory. The very reason I started this company was as a result of my experiences of dealing with ‘local’ one stop shop printers on behalf of clients in my previous work. My aim is for our company to supply the same, or better quality printing at a lower price than ‘they are’.

We’re doing alright so far - we’re growing month on month with great speed and now supply some of the largest and smallest brands and organisations in the UK.

So what’s the point of us being on here? I’ve had conversations with customers recently who have had very little understanding of the internet, and the concept of ordering online. It’s easy when you know what GSM, CMYK and 2mm bleed means to roll out instructions either online, on the phone or via email which in hindsight customers may not (and have no reason) to understand!

So we need to demistify all that… but instead of sitting writing a load of web copy which explains in boring details the intricacies of maximum ink coverage I thought it’d be more useful, entertaining and productive to BLOG about it… and in doing so, hopefully reach some of the thousands of followers we have in various social networks! (Plus it can't do the website's google ranking any harm right!? ;)

Take a peek at our website - www.thelocalprintcompany.co.uk

So that’s it. There you have it. Enjoy!
